People assume an AI reads their website the way a visitor does, top to bottom, taking in the design and the clever headline. It does not. Each assistant forms a picture of your brand from a mix of what it learned in training and what it can pull from the web, and that picture is often out of date, incomplete, or built mostly from sources you do not control. Knowing how each one sees you is where improvement starts.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini draw on different training data and, when they browse, different live sources and search partners. That is why you can be recommended by one and invisible to another for the exact same question. There is no single "the AI" to optimize for. There are three overlapping views, and each has its own blind spots.
Do not ask "what does AI think of me." Ask "what does each of these three think of me," because the answers will differ.
Part of what a model knows is baked in from training, which has a cutoff date and may not include recent changes to your business. The other part comes from live retrieval when browsing is on. This split explains a lot of odd behavior. An assistant might praise a product you discontinued, or miss a launch from last month, simply because one half of its knowledge is frozen and the other half depends on what it happened to fetch.
Here is the part that surprises people most: much of what a model believes about you comes from other places. Review platforms, comparison articles, directories, forum threads, news coverage. If those sources describe you well, the model does too. If they are thin or contradictory, your beautiful homepage cannot fully make up for it. You are being summarized by the whole web, not just by yourself.
You can still make your own pages far more useful to a model. The traits that help are unglamorous but effective:
You do not have to guess. Ask each assistant directly about your category and read how it describes you, or fails to. Look for outdated facts, missing strengths, and moments where it confidently names a competitor and skips you. Those gaps are your to do list. Fix the description, strengthen the sources, and check again. When all three start telling a clear and accurate story about your brand, the recommendations tend to follow.
